In an absolutely devastating piece in yesterday's American Spectator, George Neumayr reduces the Left's opposition to Alberto Gonzalez to complete rubble. Framing the arguments against Judge Gonzalez in the broader context of the Left's worldview, Neumayr lifts the debate from petty squabbles about the particulars of this or that memo, and shows how this attack is of a piece with the mindless, upside-down moral universe that the Left inhabits. A moral universe that is in straits because of the potential harm that might come to known criminals, but is annoyed at the suggestion that unborn children have a right to live.
Incidentally, THIS is the type of analysis to me that proves most beneficial. A fundamental, deep, and farsighted look into the heart of the enemy (and I use that word carefully) using a particular incident or occasion as a vantage point. Arguing isolated events and positions of the Left without respect to their relatedness misses the overall picture of what the Church in America faces. Put the various pieces together, like this attack on Alberto Gonzalez and the support for partial-birth abortion alongside one another as Mr. Neumayr has done, and you suddenly obtain a clear picture of the other side.
What emerges is not an incoherent, fragmented, or distorted worldview, but a consistent, God-hating (and, by extension LIFE-hating), justice-hating movement that calls good "evil" and evil "good." THIS is what the Church faces. Not Chuck Schumer, not Hillary Clinton, not the ACLU--none of them alone or even together. What the Church faces is an oppositional spirit, satanic in its origin, that has set itself against the God of the Bible and His law and seeks to work out its hatred toward God through our culture.
The words of Isaiah are searching as he looks across the centuries right into the heart of present-day America:
- Isaiah 5:18-30
- 18 Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of vanity, And
sin as if with a cart rope; 19 That say, "Let Him make speed and
hasten His work, That we may see it; And let the counsel of the Holy One of
Israel draw near and come, That we may know it." 20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good
evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for
sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe to those who
are wise in their own eyes, And prudent in their own sight! 22 Woe
to men mighty at drinking wine, Woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating
drink, 23 Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away
justice from the righteous man! 24 Therefore, as the fire devours
the stubble, And the flame consumes the chaff, So their root will be as
rottenness, And their blossom will ascend like dust; Because they have rejected
the law of the Lord of hosts, And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Christians in America have to get serious and come to grips with what we are facing both in ourselves and in our decaying, godless culture.
